Ford has announced the specs for the updated 2017 Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid, which now has a longer driving range than the 2016 model. With a total driving range of 610 miles, the 2017 Fusion Energi can now travel further than any other plug-in hybrid on the market.

Changes to the Fusion Energi’s hybrid powertrain software and regenerative braking system, means the 2017 Fusion Energi can travel up to 610 miles on a full tank of gas and battery charge – up from 550 miles for the 2016 model. With only a 21 mile electric driving range, the Fusion Energi still has a shorter electric driving range than other plug-in hybrids, like the Chevy Volt.

“Plug-in hybrids are electric vehicles until you run down the battery,” said Wade Jackson, marketing manager for Ford Fusion, “then they work exactly like a conventional hybrid. Fusion Energi – with a full battery and a full tank of gas – can go from San Diego, through Los Angeles and all the way up to San Francisco, and still have up to 110 miles of range remaining.”

If you’re wondering what Ford has in store for the rest of its electrified lineup, an updated Focus Electric is coming with a driving range over 100 miles and a 200-mile range electric car is also in the works.
