When Audi set out to redesign the A4, it decided that the current generation is a bit too soft, so the new A4’s styling gets sharper creases to make it look a bit more masculine. You’ll see many of the same design cues as the rest of the updated Audi lineup, like the new TT, but overall the styling isn’t a huge departure. Audi also says that the A4 sedan’s exterior has the best drag coefficient in its class at 0.23.
Inside it’s a different story, where the interior has been completely revamped with a large 12.3-inch virtual cockpit being the centerpiece. The large virtual screen originally debuted on the new TT and does away with the traditional gauges that you’d normally see behind the steering wheel. The center console and dash also get big updates.

Compared to the outgoing A4, the new A4 has grown a bit, but its weight has been significantly reduced – by up to 265 pounds, depending on the engine. Audi says that the body of the new A4 is one of the lightest in its class thanks to an intelligent material mix and lightweight construction.
Audi hasn’t unveiled the US-spec A4, but in Europe, the 2016 A4 will be available with seven engine options, three TFSI and four TDI. The power output of the engines has increased and ranges from 150-hp to 272-hp, but fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 21 percent. There are three transmission choices, a six-speed manual, seven-speed S tronic and eight-speed tiptronic.
The 2016 A4 will be available with a range of driver assistance and safety systems. The predictive efficiency assistant helps drivers to save fuel, Audi active lane assist helps them to stay in lane and the Stop&Go adaptive cruise control including traffic-jam assist eases driving in slow-moving traffic. The A4 also features safety technology like parking assist, rear cross-traffic assist, exit warning, collision avoidance assist, turn assist and the Audi pre-sense system. Camera-based traffic-sign recognition is also available.
The new A4 will go on sale this fall in Europe, Audi has not announced when it will arrive in the U.S.
