The standard Honda Civic may no longer have a “recommended” rating from the Consumer Reports, but the sportier Si version recently earned the publications highest rating.

Consumer Reports now Recommends the Si version of the Civic due to the fact that the 201 horsepower engine “delivers terrific acceleration at high revs.” CR likes the new engine better than the last Civic Si engine, since it now has more torque. The Si also managed to get 29 mpg overall.

Although the Civic Si now has a Recommended rating from CR, it still suffers from many of the same issues as the basic Civic models, such as vague steering, cheap plastics, a jittery ride, and lots of noise.

The latest reports claim that Honda is hard at work on an update for the Civic, which is reportedly going to arrive as early as the end of 2012.
