VIDEO: The New 911 - Porsche's Identity

2012_Porsche_911_Identity_Video.jpg
Porsche has released a new video that explains how "Our identity is the 911."

Over the years the 911 has changed, but it has maintained its distinct shape. "Instantly recognizable and originally engineered for the racetrack, it continues to stir the emotions today, just as it did in 1963."

The 911 has been completely redone for 2012, but its changes continue to be more evolutionary, which is not a bad thing.

Entry-level Porsche Roadster Delayed

2013_Porsche_Boxster_fr13.jpg
Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller recently revealed that the automaker has put the plans for a new entry-level roadster on hold. Mueller told German magazine WirtschaftsWoche, "Possibly we need to wait until the next generation of customers before the idea of a small roadster will work for Porsche."

Last February Mueller told told Automotive News Europe that the automaker was mulling the idea of a small mid-engine sports car that would be a successor to the Porsche 550 from the 1950s. The model was expected to be released by 2014.

It's been reported that Porsche was working on a new roadster that would share its platform with the production version of the VW Bluesport concept, but VW may also be killing plans for the Bluesport.

2013 Porsche Boxster Unveiled With More Power and Efficiency

2013_Porsche_Boxster.jpg
Porsche has officially taken the wraps off the all-new 2013 Porsche Boxster that will go on sale this summer.

The 2013 Boxster gets an all-new body that doesn't steer too far from the current Boxster, which is not a bad thing. The new Boxster weighs less than the previous generation and rides on a longer wheelbase and a wider track.

The Boxster can be powered by the two flat-six engines with direct-injection, thermal management and start/stop function. The base Boxster is powered by a 2.7L flat-six that puts out 265 horsepower (10 more than the current model), while the Boxster S gets its motivation from a 3.4L flat-six that packs 315 horsepower (5 more than before). Both engines can be mated to either a six-speed manual gearbox or the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK). VIDEO: Check out the 2012 Porsche 911 7-Speed Manual in Action

2012_Porsche_911_press.jpg
The all-new 2012 Porsche 911 is scheduled to debut next week at the Frankfurt Motor Show. One of the unique features on the new 911 is an available seven-speed manual transmission. We're used to seeing more gears in automatic and dual-clutch transmissions, but five-speed and six-speed manuals have been the norm, until now.

Porsche is adding a seventh gear on the 2012 911 to help improve fuel consumption at highway speeds. According to Porsche gears 1-6 have a sports ratio and the top speed is reached in sixth gear. The seventh gear has a longer ratio for lower engine speeds even when traveling at high speed and reduces the 911's fuel consumption.

Porsche Wants a Ferrari Rival

Porsche_918_spyder_fr_new3.jpg
Porsche is reportedly working on a new supercar that will go head to head with Ferrari, according to a recent statement from Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller.

"It always irritated me that the 911 tops out at 250,000 euros and then the 918 continues starting at 750,000 euros."

Mueller sees the gap between the 911 and 918 as the target for a new Porsche model. Mueller stated that the new Porsche could cost between 250,000 euros to 400,000 euros.

Porsche is also considering a new flat-eight boxer engine for the new supercar. Porsche engineers are reportedly frustrated with the fact that Porsche's current six-cylinder cannot be expanded beyond 4.0-liters. Also if Porsche wants to fully compete with Ferrari, it needs an eight-cylinder engine.

The new Porsche supercar is part of Porsche's plans to increase its global sales to 200,000 units by 2018, up from 97,000 in 2010.

VW, Audi and Porsche Roadsters Get the Green Light

vw_bluesport_concept_new_fr3.jpg
Last month it was reported that VW had decided to cancel plans for the new roadster that would spawn three different models under the VW, Audi and Porsche brands. Well those rumors were false according to a source that spoke with Autocar.

"We have not abandoned plans for a roadster along the lines of the E-tron Spyder," a source revealed to Autocar. "We have reached a stage where we are moving forward and are now in the process of progressing the business case further, but it won't go on sale until after the third-generation TT."

This news means that the mid-engined roadsters are a go. All three roadsters will share a common mid-engined platform with rear-wheel-drive. Although the roadsters will be based on the same platform, they will appeal to different buyers. Each roadster will get its own individual exterior styling. The Audi roadster will take styling cues from the E-tron Spyder concept, the Porsche will borrow cues from the 550 Spyder from the 1950's and the VW roadster will be close to the BlueSport concept.

At $845,000, the 918 Spyder is going to be far out of reach of most buyers, but what about a Porsche that is priced more along the lines of the McLaren MP4-12C, which starts at $230,000? Well it looks like Porsche is currently working a proposal for a new Porsche supercar that would compete with the McLaren, Ferrari 458 and Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4.

The new Porsche supercar, if approved would not be a limited edtion model, but a regular model that would sit above the 911, but below the 918 Spyder in Porsche's lineup.

Porsche boss Mathias Muller recently stated,"We're looking to extend the range. We've got an idea to do another mid-engined model. We're thinking above the 911 but below the 918 Spyder."

An insider stated to Autocar, "It is entirely possible that we could use a front end that's similar but not necessarily the same as the 911's, including components such as the axle and suspension. The rear end wouldn't be unlike that of the Boxster/Cayman in architectural terms, just bigger to accommodate a larger mid-mounted engine and gearbox installation, while providing greater overall length and width than the 911."

Porsche is Working on a Baby Panamera to Compete with the BMW 5-Series

2012_porsche_panamera_s_hybrid_fr_new.jpg
The Porsche Panamera has been a sales success for Porsche and like its other successful model the Cayenne, Porsche is reportedly developing a smaller model to compete with the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.

Porsche has already officially announced plans for a new smaller crossover dubbed the Cajun, which will essentially be a smaller Cayenne that will bring in younger buyers to the brand. Since the Panamera has been so successful as well, Porsche is reportedly working on a smaller model that is being internally referred to as the Pajun. The Pajun would also get a four-door coupe design, but in an overall smaller package.

Although Porsche hasn't officially announced these plans, Autobild is reporting that the Pajun will be released in 2016 with a price tag around €60,000.

The Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid officially goes on sale this week with a starting price of $845,000, but deliveries will not start until 2013.

The Porsche 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid has only been shown in concept form, but Porsche is only planning on building 918 units of the new supercar. The plug-in hybrid puts out a total 718 horsepower from a V8 engine and two electric motors and gets more than 78 mpg on the European combined driving cycle. Porsche has released sketches of the production version of the car, which show that it retains most of the design elements of the concept version. Porsche Cajun to Initially Launch as a Three-Door, Will be Based on Audi Q5

2011_porsche_cayenne_fr_new_wh.jpg
This week Porsche officially confirmed that it is working on a new baby SUV that will be called the Cajun. Now Autobild is reporting that the Cajun will initially launch with a three-door bodystyle, which will distance it from the Audi Q5, in which it will be based on.

Porsche originally planned on launching the Cajun as a five-door like the larger Cayenne, but it fears that a five-door Cajun may also take sales away from the larger Porsche SUV. Although a three-door will be the initial bodystyle, a five-door Cajun hasn't been ruled out.

The Cajun will share some of its parts with the Audi Q5, but will feature a more coupe-like bodystyle that only seats four-passengers to differentiate it.
