The Evora 400 is Lotus' fastest and most powerful production model ever!

Let's start with the most important part...400. In the new Lotus Evora 400 that equates to 400hp and 395 lb-ft of torque. It's still the same Toyota sourced supercharged 3.5L V6, but a new supercharger with new water-to-air intercooler and engine management system have brought horsepower up by 55 and torque by 100 ft-lbs. While the horsepower increase may not be substantial, the extra 100 lb-ft. of torque is impressive. Lotus now claims the Evora 400 is able to reach 0-60 mph in just 4.1 seconds with a top speed of 186 mph. This new found power allows Lotus Evora 400 to lap it's home track a breathtaking 6 seconds faster than the model it replaces.

Lotus to Unveil Three New Models in Frankfurt

The Frankfurt Motor Show is almost here. It's being reported that Lotus is expected to unveil three new models at the show, in addition to the Evora GTE for the European market.

The Lotus Evora GTE was unveiled in Pebble Beach last month. It was originally planned for just the Asian market, but the overwhelming response to the model has prompted the automaker to expand its original plans.

Lotus chief Dany Bahar stated, "The response to this model in China has been so incredible, within days we had sold out with 114 orders. In response we decided that the only logical step from a business perspective was to increase production and widen our reach."

One of the other models that Lotus is bringing to the show will be the Elise S, which replaces the Elise SC. The Elise S will be powered by a new 200-hp 1.8L engine.

Lotus hasn't released many details about the other two models that are debuting at the show other than the fact that one will be one of the fastest Lotus' ever built and the other will likely be an Exige based rally car.

Lotus Announces the Evora GTE Road Car Concept

Lotus has announced plans to unveil the Evora GTE Road Car Concept in Pebble Beach this weekend. The Evora GTE Road Car Concept is a more road friendly version of the Evora GTE race car.

It's powered by a 420 horsepower 3.5L V6 that is mated to a sequential AMT racing gearbox. The power is put on the ground via ultra-lightweight forged alloy wheels with center-lock hubs shod with Pirelli P-Zero Corsa tires.

Although Lotus hasn't confirmed if the concept will be produced, the automaker describes the concept as not "merely a paint scheme or homage to a race car - this is a serious race car that makes for a very serious road car".

Lotus to Unveil Exige-based Rally Car in Frankfurt

It's being reported that Lotus is going to unveil an Exige-based rally car at the Frankfurt Motor Show this fall. Lotus has already announced plans to widen its motorsport activities to offer a race car for the GT rally category.

According to CAR, even though the Exige is no longer produced, a successor is in the works. Claudio Berro, Lotus's director of motorsport, claims that Lotus will homologate the necessary 300 models in time for a January 2012 launch.

It's not yet known which formula (WRC or IRC) the Lotus Exige rally car will compete in.

Lotus Plans a 212 MPH Esprit Superleggera

Lotus is reportedly working on a "Superleggera" version of the upcoming 2013 Lotus Esprit supercar. The Esprit Superleggera is expected to be one of Britain's fastest and most powerful production cars. Take that Aston Martin and McLaren!

Chief technical officer Wolf Zimmermann recently told Auto Express about the plans to build a flagship Superleggera version of the next-generation Esprit. The Superleggera will be the fourth model in the Esprit range and will be sold alongside the coupe, convertible and glass-roofed Targa versions.

Zimmerman claims that the Superleggera will not be a stripped-out racer version of the Esprit, but a carefully designed evolution of the standard Esprit. It's expected to reach 0-60 mph in less than three seconds and have a top speed of 212 mph.

Lotus Esprit Coming in 2013 with "Authentic" Driving Experience and 570-HP

Lotus is going to launch the Esprit in the spring of 2013, which will be the first of several new models from Lotus. Lotus previewed the Esprit with the Esprit concept.

According to Lotus CEP Dany Bahar, the Esprit will have a more "authentic" driving experience than the Ferrari 458 Italia and McLaren MP4-12C. Bahar who recently spoke with Autocar stated that the Esprit "have the character and emotion" that the McLaren lacks.

The Esprit will be the first Lotus to be powered by Lotus' new V8 engine, which is expected to have up to 570 horsepower. The Lotus V8 is 176 pounds lighter and 40 percent smaller than the original Toyota sourced V8.

A rolling chassis for the new Esprit is already complete and fully running prototypes are expected to be ready in November. Expect to see prototypes on the Nürburging.

Lotus to Stop Production of US-Spec Exige and Elise in August

Its now confirmed. Lotus is going to end production of the US-spec Exige and Elise models in August. Lotus is basically being forced to end production of the two models because of an expiration of an airbag exemption and because Toyota has stopped producing the four-cylinder engine that powers the Lotus models.

US Lotus fans will have to wait until the fall of 2014 for the release of the next-generation Elise. In the meantime it looks like Lotus is working on developing a line of its own engines, which could mean that the next Lotus models will not be powered by Toyota engines.

Lotus to Build its Own Engines with Elan Budget

Lotus has decided to build its own range of V6 and V8 engines after it decided to delay the introduction of the new Elan. Lotus boss Dany Bahar recently stated that the mid-engined 450-hp Elan was too close to the new Esprit. So the Elan will not be released until near the end of the Esprit's product lifecycle.

Since Lotus has decided to delay the Elan, the budget that was allocated to the Elan will now be used to create a new modular engine family.

"This is a big [financial] hit because it's expensive to do
an engine,' says Bahar. "But
because the Elan is not happening now we have got capital expenditure headroom
for engine development."

According to Autocar, work on the new engines began late last year, with the first prototype V8 expected in July. The V8 engine is expected to put out between 550-570 horsepower. The current plan is to develop a 4-cyl engine from the new V8, but if that fails, Lotus will continue to use a Toyota sourced 4-cyl.

Team Lotus Buys Sportscar Maker Caterham Cars

The name Caterham may not be all that recognizable here in the U.S., but Team Lotus has officially announced the purchase of the sportscar manufacturer. Caterham is known for building lightweight track cars off the Lotus Seven chassis.

In addition to building cars off the Seven chassis, Caterham has also been working on the SP/300R prototype, which is also expected to make it to production, thanks to the new cash infusion from this sale. caterham SP:300R.jpg

Tony Fernandes, Kamarudin Meranun and SM Nasarudin, the men behind the Team Lotus Formula 1 squad, bought out Caterham's owner Corven Ventures.

To celebrate the new ownership, Caterham is going to build a limited run of Team Lotus Special Edition Sevens. Only 50 units will be built with 25 going to the UK and the remaining 25 headed to Caterham's export markets. The package can be applied to any of the Seven variants and includes the Seven being painted in the famous green and yellow colors of Lotus and will come with a raft of bespoke Team Lotus additions.

Lotus to Revamp Exige and Evora Before New Models Debut

Lotus has big plans with hopes to launch four new models within next several years, but according to Autocar, Lotus is planning on updating its current lineup first. Before the Esprit joins the lineup in late 2012 there will be a new Exige that could debut as early as the Geneva Motor Show this March. The Evora is also slated to get a refresh in 2012 with a new interior.

No specific updates have been released, but Lotus is going to start sourcing the engineering of its interiors to German automotive parts supplier CSI who has also worked on the Audi R8 and Porsche Panamera.

Lotus to Build its Own V8 for the Esprit

Lotus originally planned on using a Toyota sourced V8 engine for the upcoming Esprit, but it looks like those plans may change. Lotus boss Dany Bahar recently told Autocar that the new Esprit will be powered by a Lotus designed V8 engine.

"We have done three engines for other manufacturers; why not do it ourselves?" he said. "The engine is the heart of a sports car; we should do our own product."

Bahar stated that the decision to design its own V8 rather than using a Toyota V8 was fueled by customer feedback to a Toyota V8.

"In the mind of sports-car enthusiasts, Toyota power might not be good enough," he said.

Of course the final decision will come down to cost. The decision is expected to be finalized at the end of January.

Lotus is Working on V6 Versions of the Elise and Exige

Spy photographers recently caught a Lotus Exige prototype that had widened wheel arches, increased cooling and an engine that sounded like that of the Evora. According to sources the prototype was being powered by the same Toyota 3.6L V6 that also powers the Evora.

A V6 in the Exige would add a lot of bulk, but it would also bring more power than the current four-cylinder. But is it the right move, since the 3.5L in the Evora produces 276-hp compared to the four-cylinder engine in the Exige S that puts out 257-hp? not a huge difference considering the added weight gain of the V6.

2011 Lotus Elise Gets 46.7 MPG, but Still Hits 0-60 MPH in Six Secs

Thanks to a new smaller 1.6L engine and improved aerodynamics, Lotus has announced that the 2011 Lotus Elise has been rated at 46.7 mpg (US) on the European cycle. In addition to getting over 46 mpg, the 2011 Elise has just been certified with an outstandingly low emissions figure of 149g of CO2 / km which represents a reduction of 16% over the previous Lotus Elise S.

This means that the 2011 Elise has the lowest CO2 for its performance level for any gasoline sportscar in the world.

Even though the 2011 Elise gets great gas mileage and puts out very little emissions it still manages to reach 0-60 mph in six seconds.

It looks like the US is not going to get the 1.6L Elise, instead we will have to make due with the 190-hp 1.8L.

Geneva 10' Preview: Lotus Evora 414E Hybrid Features Two Electric Motors

Lotus has announced the Lotus Evora 414E Hybrid concept which puts out over 400 horsepower via two electric motors and one small gas engine. Like the Chevy Volt, the Evora 414E Hybrid concept features a small engine that actually doesn't send power directly to the wheels. Instead the small 1.2L three cylinder engine recharged the lithium polymer battery pack that is responsible for powering the two electric motors. Each rear wheel has its own electric motor and puts out 204-hp and 295 lb-ft. of torque. The Evora 414E Hybrid also showcases a brand new technology from Lotus Engineering, a sports mode that simulates a 7 speed, paddle shift transmission that combines exceptional driver involvement for a hybrid sports car and optimized energy recuperation.

Dr Robert Hentschel, Director of Lotus Engineering said: "Innovation has always been at the heart of Lotus and is needed now more than ever. The Evora 414E Hybrid is the perfect demonstration of Lotus Engineering's core competencies: lightweight architectures, efficient performance, electrical and electronics integration and driving dynamics. The technology demonstrator represents an encapsulation of the advanced technologies that Lotus Engineering continues to develop to overcome the current environmental challenges facing the automotive industry and showcases the future direction that the sector is taking and why Lotus Engineering is perfectly placed to lead the technological development in this area."

Lotus has only released one teaser image of the concept. Expect more details next week...
