VW is hoping that more aggressive styling will help it attract more buyers. Klaus Bischoff told Automotive News that the brand needs to improve its styling to stand out in the U.S., where its 2 percent market share doesn’t compare to the double-digit shares it holds in other markets. VW’s upcoming midsize crossover was recently redesigned following negative feedback it received from consumer clinics.

“The competition is brutal, and we are not allowed to bring cars into production that do not win clinic testing,” Bischoff said. “This car has to be the best.”

VW has also confirmed that the automaker is working on a new smaller SUV that will be smaller than the Tiguan with a footprint that will be about the same size as the Golf. A long-wheelbase version of the next-generation Tiguan is expected to arrive in 2017.
