VW unveiled the Cross Coupe concept at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show, which was a preview of the design of VW’s future SUVs and a possible new model that would be smaller than the Tiguan.

According to VW R&D boss Ulrich Hackenberg, VW is reportedly using the concept to test reaction to a new compact crossover that would go head to head with the Range Rover Evoque.

“We think the SUV segment will grow, and the number of SUV variants will grow,” he said. “Customers are showing that they like SUVs with a sporty, muscular image, and especially because of the high seating position.”

The Cross Coupe, if it’s produced could also lead to other variants, including a three-door version. The overall styling of the Cross Coupe concept will also show up in future VW SUVs like the Tiguan. The front end of the concept is expected to heavily influence the face of the next Tiguan.
