According to Autocar, VW has decided to not use two-cylinder engines in its Up city car that is expected to be released next year. VW has been downsizing its engines seen by its three-cyl gasoline engines, but R&D chief Ulrich Hackenberg thinks that downsizing is nearing its limits.

“Improvements can now only be made in performance and economy, not in making the engines any smaller,” he said. Instead, the Up will make use of three-cylinder engines that “will really advance the technology and make strong use of it”, he said.

Although VW has decided against producing a two-cylinder, Fiat has with its new two-cylinder TwinAir engine.
