The VW Beetle will officially set off into the sunset at the end of the 2019 model year and although there have been reports that it could be revived in the future as an EV, VW has killed those reports.

Motor Trend recently got to spend some time with Herbert Diess, CEO of the Volkswagen Group, where he shed some light on Volkswagen’s future. VW will soon introduce a new lineup of electric vehicles, but the Beetle won’t be one of them.

“You have to do something emotional,” Diess stated. “But I think we can’t cover the historic lineup of Volkswagen with electric cars, and we shouldn’t.”

So what the basically means is fans of VW’s iconic vehicles from the past will have to be happy with the production version of the Microbus-inspired I.D. Buzz concept. But there’s a chance that VW could introduce a second retro-inspired electric car, a production version of the I.D. Buggy concept that debuted earlier this month in Geneva.

“We could do this car if we keep one-time spending low and one-time investment low.”
