Volkswagen recently said goodbye to the iconic VW Beetle. Last year VW said that it had no plans to bring the Beetle back as an electric vehicle, but now a new trademark in Europe might say otherwise.

A forum member on the VW ID Talk forums has discovered that VW has filed trademark applications for a few classic names, but with an “e” at the front, which would signify that they are for electric vehicles. Not only did VW recently trademark the e-Beetle name, but it also trademarked e-Karmann and even the e-Golf Classic.

Right now VW has only committed to bringing one retro-themed EV to market, the microbus-inspired ID. Buzz, but could an electric Beetle also be in the works? VW hasn’t said anything so for now we’ll just have to wait and see.
