Last year Volvo announced that starting in 2021 all of its vehicles would have a limited top speed of 112 mph (180 kph) and now it’s met that goal. The speed limiter is the Volvo’s latest attempt to reduce the number of serious injuries or fatalities on the road.

Volvo has also announced the introduction of a new driver-selectable speed limited, called Care Key which gives drivers the ability to set their own speed limits below 112 mph. This is ideal for when a new driver is taking the car for a spin.

“We believe that a car maker has a responsibility to help improve traffic safety,” said Malin Ekholm, head of the Volvo Cars Safety Centre. “Our speed limiting technology, and the dialogue that it initiated, fits that thinking. The speed cap and Care Key help people reflect and realize that speeding is dangerous, while also providing extra peace of mind and supporting better driver behavior.”
