On Sunday Volkswagen is going to attempt to set a new electric car record with the I.D. R Pikes Peak electric race car at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado, which currently stands at 8:57.118 minutes. We’ll have to wait and see how it does in two days, but it looks promising, since the I.D. R Pikes Peak set the fastest time in the qualifying round.

During the qualifying round, three-time winner Romain Dumas managed to beat all of the 64 competitors with a time of 3:16.083 minutes. This means that the 671-hp I.D. R Pikes Peak will be the first electric vehicle to tackle the route that starts around 9,000 feet above sea level and climbs to the summit at 14,115 feet. We’ll have to see how it goes on Sunday, since it’s not uncommon for snow, hail and even lightning on the mountain, which could stop the record attempts.

VW has also announced that it will bring the Microbus-inspired I.D. Buzz electric car to the event for “moral support.”
