Volkswagen has announced that its first factory for its new electric cars is now being built in Anting, Shanghai. The plant will produce the VW’s electric cars that are based on its new Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB) platform.

The first electric model to roll off the production line at the SAIC Volkswagen plant in Anting will be an electric SUV in 2020.

“Through Volkswagen’s MEB platform, we will be able to easily produce state-of-the-art electric vehicles for our Chinese customers on a high scale. The Volkswagen Group, its brands and their Chinese joint venture partners focus consistently on sustainable mobility and push the transformation of the automotive industry in China and worldwide. In this way, we emphasize the importance of the Chinese market for the Volkswagen Group,” said Diess, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Group.

The new plant in Anting will be able to produce up to 300,000 vehicles a year. The plant will produce several new electric models, including medium and large electric SUVs.
