Sales of the latest Volkswagen Passat have failed to heat up the charts and now VW is responding by paring down the number of trim levels and engine options. The 2019 VW Passat is reportedly losing its V6 engine option and last year’s sporty Passat GT is one and done.
VW revealed the news about the 2019 Passat to The Car Connection, which will now only be available in Wolfsburg Edition and SE R-Line trim levels. Last year’s S, SEL and GT trim levels have been discontinued.
The 2019 Passat Wolfsburg Edition will get 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless ignition, synthetic leather seats, automatic emergency braking, and a blind-spot monitor. A moonroof and 18-inch alloy wheels are optional.
The 2019 Passat SE R-Line adds LED headlights and and taillights, an upgraded infotainment system with navigation, adaptive cruise control, parking sensors, active lane control, and a Fender audio system.
Now that the 3.6L V6 is done, the only engine available will be a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder that’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. With only 174 horsepower and 184 lb-ft. of torque, the four-cylinder’s specs are on the lower end in the midsize sedan segment.
