The all-new 2012 Porsche 911 is scheduled to debut next week at the Frankfurt Motor Show. One of the unique features on the new 911 is an available seven-speed manual transmission. We’re used to seeing more gears in automatic and dual-clutch transmissions, but five-speed and six-speed manuals have been the norm, until now.
Porsche is adding a seventh gear on the 2012 911 to help improve fuel consumption at highway speeds. According to Porsche gears 1-6 have a sports ratio and the top speed is reached in sixth gear. The seventh gear has a longer ratio for lower engine speeds even when traveling at high speed and reduces the 911’s fuel consumption.
