For the first time ever the Toyota Prius is now available with all-wheel drive thanks to the addition of the Prius AWD-e model. Toyota unveiled the 2019 Prius AWD-e last month and now we know how much extra it will cost over the standard Prius.

The 2019 Toyota Prius AWD-e starts at $27,300 for the LE trim level, which is $1,400 more than the front-wheel drive Prius LE. The Prius XLE AWD-e starts at $29,740, which is only $1,000 more than the FWD Prius XLE.

To give the Prius all-wheel drive, the rear axle now has an electric motor that can power the rear wheels when extra traction is needed at speeds up to 43 mph. The 2019 Prius AWD-e is rated at 52 mpg city and 48 mpg highway rating compared to the front-wheel drive Prius, which is rated at 58 mpg city and 53 mpg highway.
