Toyota has been testing a plug-in version of the popular Prius hybrid in Japan for some time, but now the automaker has announced that testing is going to continue in the UK as well.

Toyota has teamed up with EDF Energy to test the small fleet of Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrids in the UK. Toyota employees will be driving the cars around the UK for a year.

According to insiders Toyota is hoping to achieve a range of 12 miles on electricity alone for the plug-in version. Toyota hopes to deliver plug-in hybrids with lithium ion batteries to fleet customers in Europe by 2010.

Toyota is expected to unveil an all-new Prius at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2009.
