Toyota’s popular Prius became the top-selling vehicle in Japan last year. It was the first time a hybrid model has held the top spot. Toyota sold 208,876 units in Japan last year, which is almost three times more than were sold in 2008. Hybrid sales account for 10 percent of the market in Japan. According to Green Car Congress hybrids only account for 2.8 percent of new vehicle sales in the US.
The Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris came in second and third. Honda’s Insight hybrid only moved 93,283 units bringing it in at fifth place.
