Rivian’s next electric car will be inspired by a rally car

Rivian R1S

Last month Rivian emerged as one of the coolest new electric car start ups with the debut of the R1T and R1S at the LA Auto Show. Now Rivian has already confirmed what its third electric car will be, a high riding electric high performance car that will be the brand’s interpretation of a rally car.

“The third vehicle will have a smaller wheelbase [than the R1S SUV] and will be the Rivian interpretation of a rally car with a lot of ground clearance,” Rivian founder and CEO RJ Scaringe recently told Autocar.

For now that’s all the information we have about Rivian’s third electric car. Rivian has already confirmed that production of the R1T truck and R1S SUV will kick off in 2020. We’ll have to wait at least a few years for the rally-inspired sports car.

Both the R1T and R1S are based on the same modular skateboard platform with an electric motor at each wheel. The electric driving range is expected to be around 400 miles for both vehicles.
