Electric car owners in Europe will soon be able to charge their EVs easier and faster thanks to Ionity, which is a new charging network that’s being created by BMW, Daimler, Ford, and the VW Group.

With a capacity of up to 350 kW per charging point, the Ionity charging network will use the European charging standard Combined Charging System to significantly reduce charging times compared to existing systems. The plan is to launch 400 high powered charging stations by 2020 across Europe, with the first 20 being opened this year. The first stations are located on major roads in Germany, Norway and Austria. The network will expand to 100 charging stations in 2018.

“The first pan-European HPC network plays an essential role in establishing a market for electric vehicles. IONITY will deliver our common goal of providing customers with fast charging and digital payment capability, to facilitate long-distance travel,” said Chief Executive Officer Michael Hajesch.
