Subaru has confirmed that it’s getting ready to introduce a new plug-in hybrid model that will borrow some of its parts from the Toyota Prius Prime. Since Subaru is partially tied to Toyota, it’s tapping the auto giant for its plug-in hybrid tech that will be used by one of its current models.
Subaru hasn’t announced which model will get the plug-in hybrid powertrain, but it’s expected that it will be offered in either the Crosstrek or Forester. If it’s offered in the Crosstrek, this will be the second time that the Crosstrek will be offered with a hybrid powertrain, although the first one didn’t do so well.
Even though Subaru is borrowing the Prius Prime’s technology, we’ll have to see what changes it gets, specifically its electric driving range. The all-wheel drive powertrain in the Subaru will likely make it a bit less efficient than the Prius Prime, so don’t expect the same 25 mile EV range.
Subaru will initially only sell the plug-in hybrid in the 10 U.S. states that have adopted California’s zero-emission vehicle regulations.
