We’ve known that Porsche is working on a new Speedster version of the current 911, which will basically be its last hurrah before the next-generation 911 arrives. Now Porsche has given us a preview with the debut of the 911 Speedster concept.

The Porsche 911 Speedster concept not only previews the new Speedster, but is also part of Porsche’s 70th anniversary celebration. Porsche received its operating permit exactly 70 years ago today, on June 8, 1948. The 911 Speedster concept is derived from the 911 GT3 and Porsche says that a production version may arrive in 2019.

Like the Porsche 356 1500 Speedster, the 911 Speedster concept features a shorter window frame with a more inclined windshield with shortened side windows and a lightweight tonneau cover protects the interior from the elements. A special rear cover made of carbon fiber behind the front seats covers the roll-over protection system and features the ‘double bubble’. At the rear there are also two contrasting black slats between the ‘humps’ and a transparent Plexiglas wind deflector features an engraved ‘70 years of Porsche’ logo.

Inside the navigation, radio and air conditioning systems have all been eliminated to reduce the 911 Speedster’s weight and the light brown Aniline leather seats are are made of carbon fiber. The decklid, trunk lid and front fenders are also made of carbon fiber.

To recall Porsche’s classic sports cars, the 911 Speedster concept is painted in traditional GT silver and white. The retro theme continues with its 50s-style central fuel tank cap, the classic Talbot shape of the exterior mirrors or the unique X design on the headlights.

The 911 Speedster concept borrows the 911 GT3’s chassis. A naturally-aspirated flat six-cylinder engine with 500 horsepower and a 9,000 rpm redline adds to the fun.
