VW is currently working on the next-generation GTI and Golf models, with prototypes caught testing in Europe. The latest reports claim that the next GTI will get a mild power boost from its 2.0L turbocharged engine.

The next GTI is going to get a boost to 220 horsepower thanks to tweaks to the current 2.0L engine, which includes a new valve lift system developed by Audi. A new electronically controlled, mechanically locking differential is being added to the GTI and R models.

VW recently unveiled a R-badged Golf Cabriolet concept, which according to Autocar is more likely to see production than a GTI-badged Cabriolet.

The next-gen Golf is expected to be released late next year as a 2013 model and the next GTI will debut sometime in 2013.
