Just over a week ago more rumors surfaced that Porsche is mulling a successor to the front engine, rear-wheel-drive 928 coupe. Now according to the German newspaper Handelsblatt, Porsche’s CEO Matthias Mueller has confirmed plans to produce a successor to the Porsche 550.

“I can imagine that such a modern version of the famous ‘James Dean’ Porsche would be well-received by our customers,” Matthias stated.

The new model will be smaller than the Boxster and based on a new mid-engined platform that it will share with the upcoming VW and Audi roadsters.

The Porsche 550 was produced from 1953-1956.
