MINI is reportedly mulling the idea of bringing a diesel-powered MINI Cooper to the U.S. based on the strong interest that its dealers have received. Over the past few years the U.S. has started to welcome new diesel models from VW, Audi and BMW, so there is a possibility that MINI could bring its diesel-powered Cooper to the U.S.
Pat McKenna, MINI’s product chief has revealed that the automaker has received a lot of demand for a diesel from its customers and dealer network, but no final decision has been made. If MINI does decide to bring a diesel-powered Cooper to the U.S., it will most likely be powered by a 1.5L three-cylinder diesel engine with 116 horsepower and 199 lb-ft. of torque. In Europe this engine is rated at 67 mpg on the EU cycle.

McKenna also revealed that a plug-in hybrid MINI is in the works and will it will join the MINI family before a diesel does here.
