The iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Class is getting its first complete redesign since its introduction in 1979. To celebrate the debut of the all-new 2019 G-Class, Mercedes-Benz has created an installation at the Detroit Auto Show with an original G-Class preserved in amber.

“The amber cube puts the uniqueness of the G-Class in a nutshell”, says Dr Gunnar Güthenke, Head of the Off-Road Vehicle product unit at Mercedes-Benz. “Our cult off-road vehicle has been continuously evolving for nearly 40 years – without losing its character or its core values. Its DNA is stronger than time and than any fashion trend. The cube expresses this to stunning effect and thus embodies the objective for advancing the G-Class.”

Since the G-Class is one of the most iconic SUVs ever created, like the Jeep Wrangler or Land Rover Defender, Mercedes-Benz isn’t going to mess with it too much. Most buyers probably won’t even be able to tell the difference between the the all-new 2019 G-Class and the original.
