Mazda has announced that it has been named as the most fuel efficient automaker for the fifth year in a row, by the EPA. The EPA’s Light Duty Fuel Economy Trends Report lists Mazda in the top spot for the fifth year in a row for the 2016 model year.
The EPA’s report summarizes fuel economy trends by model year for vehicles sold in the U.S. and ranks automakers by Manufacturer Adjusted Fuel Economy. Mazda’s overall average fuel economy was 29.6 miles per gallon, improved 0.4 mpg over the previous year.
Hyundai came in second at 28.8 mpg, followed by Honda at 28.2 mpg, Subaru at 28.1 mpg and Nissan at 27.9 mpg. At the bottom of the list were Chrysler at 21.8 mpg, GM at 22.2 mpg and Ford at 22.8 mpg.
The EPA hasn’t published its 2017 report yet, but it’s expected that Mazda will lose its top spot as Honda’s average will likely climb to 29.5 mpg, while Mazda will see its average fuel economy drop to 29.3.
