Earlier this year Mazda hinted at the return of the rotary engine as a range extender in the MX-30 EV and now it’s been confirmed. In a recent video, Mazda CEO Akira Marumoto confirmed that the MX-30 will get a rotary engine (skip to 7:34 in the video).

The rotary engine will be used as a range extender in the MX-30 for buyers that need more range than the standard all-electric MX-30. Mazda plans to start testing prototypes next year with the goal to have a production version of the MX-30 with a rotary engine on the road in Japan in 2022.

Mazda hasn’t announced any plans to sell the MX-30 in the US.

While the announcement confirms the rotary engine is coming back, Mazda has not released any specific information about it. Mazda also hasn’t announced any plans to put the rotary engine in any other models. Either way this is good news for rotary engine enthusiasts.
