Maserati is reportedly working on a new plug-in hybrid version of the Maserati Levante SUV. Maserati doesn’t currently have any electrified models in its lineup to pull the technology from, so the tech will come from another member of the FCA family – the Chrysler Pacific Hybrid minivan.

The Levante plug-in hybrid will still drive just like any other Maserati

CEO, Harald Wester has confirmed that the Pacifica’s hybrid powertrain is going to be used for a greener version of the Levante. If you’re wondering why Maserati doesn’t just develop a new system for the Levante, it’s because Maserati only estimates that about 10 percent of Levante buyers will actually opt for the plug-in hybrid version. The move to borrow the Pacifica’s system will not only save Maserati some cash, but also shorten the development time.

Even though its hybrid powertrain will be borrowed from a minivan, Maserati assures us that the Levante will still perform just like any other model with the Maserati badge. “If it will be a Maserati — Maserati means many things. One of these things is the pleasure of driving. If we can deliver with hybrid technology or electric technology the same feeling that you can deliver with the current product range, why not,” Maserati’s overseas markets, Umberto Cini stated.

The Levante plug-in hybrid will be the first Maserati hybrid, but plug-in hybrid versions of the Quattroporte and Ghibli are also expected.
