The Lexus LS is available with a hybrid powertrain, but if Lexus wants to compete with future electrified flagship sedans from brands, like Mercedes-Benz and BMW, it has to go further. According to the LS’ chief engineer, Lexus is currently looking at the possibility of fully electric and even fuel cell powered versions of the LS.
Toshio Asahi, the chief engineer for the LS, recently told GoAuto that plug-in hybrid, EV and hydrogen fuel-cell versions of the LS were “all on the table.” Asahi also confirmed that Lexus is working on a more powerful conventional hybrid powertrain for the LS, which will be more powerful than the current 354-hp hybrid powertrain. “Of course, we are considering how to improve the hybrid system, so in terms of power, we are looking how to improve that,” he stated.
This isn’t the first time that we’re hearing about the possibility of the LS getting a fuel cell powertrain, since back in 2015 Lexus unveiled the LF-FC fuel cell concept, which was a preview of the new LS. While Asahi didn’t confirm the fuel cell powered LS, one Lexus did state to GoAuto that it will be offered “sooner than you think.”
