Last week Land Rover unveiled the ultra luxurious 2018 Range Rover SVAutobiography, but as more rivals move further upmarket, Land Rover may introduce something even more luxurious. With rivals like Bentley, Rolls-Royce and even Lamborghini jumping into the SUV scene, Land Rover may decide to step up its game even further with a luxurious two-door Range Rover.

Land Rover’s design boss Gerry McGovern hinted at a new flagship during the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show. He revealed to Drive that Land Rover’s new Special Vehicle Operations team could create a limited-run of bespoke vehicles in the future, like a two-door flagship.

“I can’t say when, but there are opportunities. We have proven that with Range Rover, with the ability to offer derivations of these established vehicles, and offer them in a way that resonates with people in a relevant way. At a certain price point everybody rationalizes and asks why did I spend that much money on that thing – so it has to have integrity.”

Even if sales of a two-door flagship Range Rover remain small, McGovern doesn’t see that as an issue.

“The good thing about SVO, it is a self-funding business within a business, so there are opportunities to do things within that operation like that. It doesn’t necessarily have to be in the mainstream. It could be a small volume run that lends itself to that.”

At the other end of the lineup, Land Rover recently killed the two-door Range Rover Evoque. When asked if there will be two-door version of the next-generation Evoque, McGovern revealed that it will likely only be offered as a four-door.

“There is less of a market for one these day, especially with the Evoque Convertible, so do we need to do it?
