Kia has released two teaser photos of its new Niro Hybrid Crossover concept ahead of its debut next year. The Niro will be Kia’s first dedicated hybrid model.
According to Kia, the Niro will be about the same size as a compact SUV and rather than use one of its existing models to produce the hybrid, Kia has designed a completely new platform from the ground up. There’s probably a chance that a plug-in hybrid version could also be in the works, since the platform has been designed to accommodate a set of environmentally-conscious technologies and next-generation powertrains.

Kia hasn’t revealed what the Niro hybrid will be powered by, but it’s being reported that it will get the same hybrid powertrain as Hyundai’s upcoming Prius rival. That means it will be powered by a 1.6L four-cylinder engine that will be mated to a 32 kW electric motor and 1.45 lWh lithium-polymer battery.
Production is expected to kick off by next fall.
