Land Rover recently announced that it has restarted production of the iconic Defender and now Jaguar has announced something even better. 62 years after the last Jaguar D-Type race car was produced, Jaguar has now announced that restarting production to build 25 new cars.
The production of the additional 25 Jaguar D-Type cars actually completes Jaguar’s original goal that it set way back in 1955. In 1955 Jaguar planned to build 100 D-type models, but only 75 were built. Each of the 25 D-Type race cars will be hand built at Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works in Warwickshire, UK with the first one set to debut at the Salon Retromobile show in Paris this week.
“The Jaguar D-type is one of the most iconic and beautiful competition cars of all time, with an outstanding record in the world’s toughest motor races. And it’s just as spectacular today,” Tim Hannig, Jaguar Land Rover Classic Director, said. “The opportunity to continue the D-type model’s success story, by completing its planned production run in Coventry, is one of those once-in-a-lifetime projects that our world-class experts at Jaguar Land Rover Classic are proud to fulfill.”
The D-type is the third continuation vehicle from Jaguar Classic, complementing the six missing Lightweight E-type models completed in 2014-15 and nine XKSS models built in 2017-18. D-type buyers will be able to choose either 1955-specification Shortnose or 1956-spec Longnose bodywork.
