The Genesis brand recently launched its third model, the 2019 G70 sedan, but while Genesis now has a lineup of three models, they are all sedans. Given the fact that buyers now prefer crossovers than sedans, the fact that the Genesis doesn’t offer one is putting the brand at an obvious disadvantage compared to its rivals. Well we shouldn’t have to wait too long for a Genesis SUV to arrive, since the first one is coming in early 2020.

Genesis GV80 Concept

Erwin Raphael, executive director of Genesis Motor America revealed last week that Genesis will release its first SUV in early 2020 and it will be called the GV80. We got a preview of the GV80 as a concept last year and the production version is expected to look pretty close to it.

The midsize GV80 will go on sale about the same time as the next-generation G80 sedan and both models will be built on the same platform. Under the hood both models are expected to arrive with the same 3.8-liter V-6, twin-turbo 3.3-liter V-6, and 5.0-liter V-8 engine options that the current G80 offers.

We’ll likely get to see both the new G80 and GV80 debut sometime next year before they both go on sale in 2020. Following the GV80’s arrival, Genesis will release a second smaller SUV called the GV70 in early 2021.
