Fiat has made it no secret that the 500e is simply a compliance car in the US and although it’s been overshadowed by other electric cars, Fiat has confirmed that it’s working on a new one. Late last month, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles confirmed that it’s working on a new dedicated small Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) platform that will be used by the next-generation Fiat 500e.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) made the announcement at a meeting with the trade unions in Turin, Italy.

“Mirafiori will represent the first installation of a full BEV platform applied on the new Fiat 500, capable of scaling to other applications worldwide,” stated FCA CEO Mike Manley. “Additional investments across our Jeep, Alfa Romeo, and Fiat brands will realize the benefits of existing plant capacity as well as scale and sourcing efficiencies from a common vehicle architecture, and Plug-in Hybrid Electric propulsion (PHEV) system, while preserving traits unique to the brands.”

Fiat hasn’t confirmed when the new Fiat 500e electric car will debut.
