One of the benefits of owning an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle in California is the fact that the state also gives owners access to HOV lanes, even if they are driving alone. The current white and green Clean Air stickers give owners free access to the coveted carpool lanes in California, but those stickers are about to expire, but that doesn’t mean the perk is gone.
Green Car Reports is reporting that California will soon start issuing new purple Clean Air stickers, which will remain valid until January 1, 2023, which is longer than the new red stickers that expire in 2022. The catch is that current electric and plug-in hybrid owners won’t be able to apply for the new purple stickers. Instead the purple Clean Air stickers are only eligible for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles that are purchased after January 1, 2019.
Since we’re just about a month away from the beginning of 2019, it’s probably a better idea to wait to buy it until after the beginning of the year.
