Now that the all-new 2019 BMW 3 Series sedan has been unveiled, what does that mean for the future of the 3-Series GT? Well, it’s been reported several times that the 3 Series GT would eventually disappear and now BMW has confirmed that the 3 Series GT is done.

2017 BMW 3 Series GT

BMW’s global development chief Klaus Frohlich confirmed to Motoring at the Paris Motor Show that there are no plans for a new 3 Series GT. The 3 Series GT was introduced in 2013 for buyers that wanted a bit more space and versatility than the 3 Series sedan could provide, but the tall hatchback never really caught on. Instead buyers in this segment decided to buy BMW’s X1 or X3 SUV.

“Things are changing,” Frohlich stated. “When we did the GT we saw that in demographic change people want to sit a little more upright. But then you saw X1 and X3 you can sit upright and you feel younger.”

BMW hasn’t confirmed when production of the 3 Series GT will stop, but the latest report claims that production will cease in the summer of 2020.
