Aston Martin is going to bring its classic models into the future with the availability of a new electric powertrain conversion. The first model to receive the reversible EV powertrain is the 1970 DB6 MkII Volante.
Jaguar recently performed a similar conversion by swapping out the combustion engine with an electrified powertrain in the classic E-Type and now Aston Martin has taken a similar route, although its conversion is completely reversible.
Aston Martin has developed an EV powertrain that it calls a “cassette,” which is placed in the same spot as the original engine and transmission. Several cables from the EV powertrain then feed the car’s electrical systems. Inside a small dedicated screen provides information about the powertrain.
“We are very aware of the environmental and social pressures that threaten to restrict the use of classic cars in the years to come,” stated Andy Palmer, Aston Martin CEO. “Our Second Century Plan not only encompasses our new and future models, but also protects our treasured heritage. I believe this not only makes Aston Martin unique, but a truly forward-thinking leader in this field.”
Aston Martin hasn’t revealed how much the conversion costs.
