Before the New York International Auto Show, Volkswagen showed off the completely new 2027 Atlas. It has a redesigned exterior, a nicer interior, and a stronger turbocharged engine. The second generation Atlas is doing what made the first one successful, but with more tech, more things included as standard, and a more luxurious feel throughout.
The 2027 Atlas is based on a new MQB evo platform has all new body panels, new lights and a more up to date style on the outside. At the front, you’ll find double stacked LED headlights, a revamped grill and, optionally, a VW badge that lights up. At the rear, the full width taillight and a more carefully shaped body give it a more expensive look. And it gets new wheel designs, from 18 to 21 inches, with Blackberry, Sacramento Green and Sandstone being new color choices.
Inside, the Atlas cabin is totally different, with much nicer materials and a more current arrangement. Actual wood trim is now available on all versions, alongside new interior color schemes and better leather on the higher specification models. The gear stick has been put on the steering column, giving families more space in the middle console and making it more useful, and a large 15 inch screen is on most versions. Lower trims have a 12.9 inch screen.
All of the Atlas versions will have a 10.25 inch Digital Cockpit Pro digital display for the driver. Volume, driving modes and ambient lights are all changed using a new Driver Experience Dial. The updated Qi2 wireless charger can now charge two phones at once. Volkswagen have also included a voice assistant that uses generative AI and there are more USB-C ports in the passenger area.
The 2027 Atlas engine is an improved 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, giving 282 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque; that’s more than the previous model. It comes with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, is front-wheel drive as standard but you can get 4Motion all-wheel drive. It can still tow 5,000 pounds and Volkswagen have said they are planning a hybrid version at a later date.
Volkswagen will tell us the full price and all the details of the 2027 Atlas nearer to its release later this year.
