For eco-conscious car buyers, the 2023 Toyota Prius marks a significant shift in the hybrid landscape. Gone are the quirky looks and lackluster performance; instead, Toyota is giving hybrid buyers more style, a sportier driving experience all without making any compromises to fuel efficiency.

2023 Toyota Prius Review

The Prius has maintained the same overall shape since the introduction of the second generation, but now that familiar wedge shape is gone and now replaced with a much more pleasing design. The 2023 Prius sits 2 inches lower, stretches an extra inch in length, and expands by an inch in width compared to its predecessor. This transformation imbues the Prius with a sportier and more eye-catching presence. Unlike any Prius before it, the 2023 Prius is a head turner.

Beneath the hood, the 2023 Prius is powered by a larger 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two motor-generators. This revamped hybrid system delivers a combined 194 horsepower, a significant improvement from the previous 121 horsepower in the Prius. Torque has also seen a boost, climbing from 120 pound-feet to 139 lb-ft. The new Prius can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.2 seconds, which is a big improvement over the 9.8 seconds it took for the last generation Prius to reach that speed.

For those seeking all-wheel drive, the Prius offers an additional electric motor powering the rear wheels, bringing the total output to 196 hp and a 0-60 mph time of 7.0 seconds.

Even with this increased power, the Prius continues to lead the way in fuel efficiency, with a combined rating of up to 57 mpg. The XLE and Limited trim levels achieve up to 52 MPG combined, while all-wheel drive variants range from 49 to 54 MPG. For those who prioritize efficiency, the Prius Prime plug-in hybrid is an option.

During our week with the Prius the additional power was  definitely noticeable. The Prius now accelerates more briskly than ever. It offers three driving modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport. The Normal and Sport modes cater to those seeking a sportier experience. The new, lighter, and more powerful lithium-ion battery enables extended electric-only driving and smoother transitions between the electric motor and the gas engine, a notable improvement from the previous clunky experience.

The all-wheel drive Prius also features a rear electric motor that enhances traction and power delivery, especially on winding roads.

The increased power is just the beginning. The suspension and steering have also been upgraded, providing improved feedback and making the Prius feel more planted on the road. The new Prius is also lighter, further contributing to its confident performance.

Inside, the quirky styling has been replaced by a more conventional cabin design. The previous center-mounted speedometer has been replaced by a digital screen in front of the driver, which is similar to what you’ll see in the bZ4X electric SUV. However, we observed that the screen could be partially obstructed by the steering wheel depending on your height. The shifter’s placement has been shifted to the center console, eliminating the awkward location in the previous model.

The Prius comes with an 8-inch touchscreen as standard, with a larger 12.3-inch screen available. The infotainment system now runs on Toyota’s latest software, which is not only more intuitive but also has a modern look. Toyota has also enhanced the materials, lending a more upscale feel to the cabin. Lower seats and a reduced roof height contribute to a sportier driving experience, though headroom in the back may be slightly compromised, but our 6 feet tall friends were able to feel comfortable in the second row. An optional fixed glass roof provides a more airy atmosphere.

On the safety front, the 2023 Prius includes the Toyota Sense 3.0 suite as standard. This suite incorporates a range of safety features, including Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, Automatic High Beams, and Proactive Driving Assist. The new Proactive Driving Assist system automatically adjusts the Prius’s speed when approaching slower vehicles or navigating curves.

With a starting price of $28,545, inclusive of destination charges, the 2023 Toyota Prius offers all-wheel drive as an option for an additional $1,500 across three trim levels (LE, XLE, and Limited).

In summary, the 2023 Toyota Prius has been reborn for the eco-conscious driver. Its unconventional styling and odd interior have been replaced with a more conventional, stylish, and enjoyable driving experience.
