The Toyota Corolla is one of the oldest nameplates in the industry, but that doesn’t matter since Toyota has given the 2020 Corolla a huge redo. Following the well received Corolla hatchback that debuted earlier this year, Toyota has revamped the Corolla sedan with a new platform, more dynamic styling and a new emphasis on performance.
To start the 2020 Toyota Corolla now rides on Toyota’s new TNGA platform, which is already used by models like the Prius, Camry and even the new RAV4. The 2020 Corolla sedan rides on the same 106.3-inch wheelbase as the outgoing Corolla, but its front overhang has been shortened by 1.3-inches and its rear overhang is now almost half an inch longer. Its height has also been reduced by 0.8 inches.
On the outside the 2020 Corolla is more stylish than the outgoing model as well. Toyota says its designers used a “shooting robust” theme to describe styling of the new Corolla sedan. At the front the Corolla sedan has a face that’s similar to the Corolla hatchback, but as you move towards the rear the Corolla sedan has a look all its own.
Inside Toyota’s designers went for a more minimalistic styling theme or what the designers call “sensuous minimalism.” The interior has a clean, simple design with the focus being the center console with its 7- or 8-inch touchscreen and simple climate control buttons and knobs. In front of the driver, the Corolla sedan is available with either a 4.2- or 7-inch Multi-Information Display.
The 2020 Corolla sedan is also available with the latest Entune 3.0 Audio system which includes Apple CarPlay compatibility, Amazon Alexa, Entune 3.0 App Suite Connect, Safety Connect, Wi-Fi Connect and Siri Eyes Free. A JBL nine-speaker, 800-watt system audio system is also available.
Under the hood, the 2020 Corolla comes standard with the same 1.8L as the outgoing Corolla, but if you want more power the the XSE and SE trim levels are powered by a 2.0L four-cylinder that generates 169 horsepower and 151 lb-ft. of torque. Buyers will be able to choose from either a 6-speed manual or a CVT transmission.
On the safety front, the 2020 Corolla sedan comes standard with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 safety suite, which bundles a pre-collision system, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert, lane tracing assist, automatic high beams, and road sign assist. A blind spot monitor is optional.
The 2020 Toyota Corolla sedan will arrive next spring.
