Hyundai has confirmed that the next-generation 2020 Hyundai Sonata will debut at the 2019 New York Auto Show in April. Hyundai hasn’t released any teasers of the 2020 Sonata, but it will be inspired by the Le Fil Rouge concept.

SangYup Lee, head of the Hyundai Global Design Center in Namyang, Korea, recently spoke to MotorTrend about the future of the Sonata and what we can expect from the 2020 Sonata. According to Lee it will be a “head-turner” similar to the 2011 Sonata. “It’s almost like a four-door coupe style without compromising the usability inside.”

While the 2020 Sonata will borrow some styling cues from the Le Fil Rouge concept, Hyundai is taking it a step further with a face that isn’t instantly recognizable. Hyundai has decided to ditch the Russian doll styling of its current models and instead inject more emotion into its models.

The decision to add more excitement into the eighth-generation Sonata is also in response to the shrinking sedan segment. “The new Sonata is quite challenging for us obviously just because we all know that market is shrinking and taken over by SUVs,” Lee stated. Unlike Ford and GM who are cutting their sedan lineups, Hyundai decided to keep the Sonata alive, since it accounts for a sixth of its sales.
