Volvo has confirmed that the next-generation Volvo S60 will not be offered with a diesel engine when it debuts later this spring. This marks the first time that Volvo will not offer a diesel engine in one of its models, which is part of its plan to convert to a fully electrified lineup.
Starting mild petrol hybrid, plug-in petrol hybrid or battery electric vehicle with mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid or fully electric powertrains. “Our future is electric and we will no longer develop a new generation of diesel engines,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive of Volvo Cars. “We will phase out cars with only an internal combustion engine, with gas hybrid versions as a transitional option as we move towards full electrification. The new S60 represents the next step in that commitment.”
Volvo hopes to that fully electric cars will account for at least half of its sales by 2025. When the 2019 S60 arrives this year it will initially be offered with four-cylinder engines and two plug-in hybrid options. Mild hybrid powertrains will be added to the S60 lineup next year. Volvo hasn’t revealed that many details about the 2019 S60, but we did catch a leaked photo.
