The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is officially rolling off the production line in Graz, Austria. This marks the first time that the iconic G-Class has ever been completely redesigned since its introduction in 1979. You might not have known this, but production of the G-Class has always been completed by Magna Steyr, since its introduction at the Graz, Austria plant.
“With the model change the new G-Class experienced the biggest transformation in its 39 years-old history. At the same time we have kept the familiar and popular features of the design icon and further optimized the ‘G’ where ride comfort and robustness are concerned. The superior development goal for the new G-Class was to improve the off road capabilities even more. For the production we continue to trust in our experienced production partner since 39 years, Magna Steyr”, emphasizes Gunnar Güthenke, Head of the Off-Road Product Group at Mercedes-Benz.
Mercedes-Benz has yet to announce the full pricing details for the 2019 G-Class, but pricing is expected to start around the same price as the outgoing G-Class around $125,000. The 2019 G-Class will be offered in G550 and G63 versions with the G550 getting a 4.0L turbocharged V8 with 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft. of torque, while the G63 gets a 4.0L V8 with 577 horsepower and 627 lb-ft. of torque.
While the 2019 G-Class may not look that different from the original, there are some big changes. It’s 2.1-inches longer and 4.8-inches wider than its predecessor. There’s a new independent front suspension and an electric rack-and-pinion steering system.
Inside the interior now looks more modern with optional digital gauges and a standard 12.3-inch navigation display. The larger exterior also means that there’s more more leg, elbow and head room than before.
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class will go on sale in late 2018.
