While the Mazda CX-5 continues to be one of the more playful compact crossovers, we’ve wished that it had a bit more power under the hood. Well Mazda has made our wish come true with a new 2.5L turbo for the 2019 CX-5 and now we know how much more fuel it drinks than the naturally-aspirated engine.
The EPA has released the fuel economy specs for the turbocharged Mazda CX-5, which is rated at 23/28 mpg with front-wheel drive or 22/27 mpg if you choose all-wheel drive. The naturally-aspirated engine is rated at 25/31 mpg with front-wheel drive or 24/30 mpg with all-wheel drive.
If you need a reminder the turbocharged 2.5L four-cylinder generates 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft. of torque, which is a nice improvement over the naturally aspirated 2.5L engine that only generates 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft.
To compare the turbocharged CX-5 is more fuel efficient than the Ford Escape with its turbocharged 2.0L that is rated at up to 21/28 mpg. The front-wheel drive VW Tiguan is also less fuel efficient than the CX-5 with its 22/27 mpg rating.
