Acura has unveiled the all-new third-generation 2019 Acura RDX Prototype at the 2018 North American International Auto Show. The 2019 RDX Prototype is a near production version of the 2019 RDX, which will go on sale later this year.
Acura says that the 2019 RDX has received the most extensive Acura redesign in more than a decade and that the new RDX signals the beginning of a new era for the automaker. The 2019 Acura RDX is the first model to get Acura’s new design language that was previewed by the Acura Precision Concept. Its interior also takes cues from the Acura Precision Cockpit.
The new RDX is now lower and wider than the last model with its track being widened 1.2-inches and its wheelbase stretched 2.5-inches. At the front the 2019 RDX is also the first model to be designed from the ground up with its diamond pentagon grille.
Under the skin, the 2019 RDX is based on a new Acura exclusive platform. The new RDX is now lighter and its body is stiffer than before. A new 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder replaces the old V6 and it’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Acura’s Super-Handling All Wheel Drive system also makes a return.
Inside the biggest thing you’ll notice is a new panoramic sliding moonroof that Acura says is the largest in its class. The new dashboard looks cleaner with a 10.2-inch HD display mounted on top. The screen is now operated via a touchpad, that is hopefully better than other similar systems, like in the Lexus NX.
“Absolute positioning transforms the touchpad experience, making it personal, intuitive and particularly well-suited for premium, driver-centric, performance machines,” said Ross Miller, senior engineer of user interface research. “It’s also designed to be adopted quickly and easily, as drivers become acclimated and comfortable in minutes.”
