After teasing us with several camouflaged X2 prototypes, BMW has finally unveiled the 2018 BMW X2. Not familiar with what the X2 is? It’s basically a more “coupe-like” version of the X1. It’s what the X4 is to the X3 and the X6 to the X5.
While the BMW X4 and X6 models have a similar shape, the BMW X2 gets a different roofline that makes it look even sleeker. Compared to the X1, the X2 is 3.2 inches shorter and 2.8 inches lower, but it rides on the same wheelbase. The X2’s short overhangs, low roofline and slim windows give it a more muscular look than the more practical X1.
“The BMW X2 fuses the fast-moving forms of a coupe with the robust volumes of an X model,” sums up Thomas Sycha, Head of Design BMW Compact Class. “It was important to us to make these apparently conflicting aspects of the BMW X2 and the car’s individual character something you experience from every angle and at first glance.”
In the U.S. the X2 will initially only be offered with BMW’s 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder, although a diesel engine is available in other markets. The BMW X2 xDrive28i has 228 hp and 258 lb-ft. of torque and the four-cylinder is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The X2 xDrive28i can reach 60 mph 6.3 seconds. If you want to amp up the sportiness of the X2, an M Sport suspension lowers the X2 by 0.4 inches and adds specially adapted anti-roll bar bearings.
Inside the 2018 BMW X2 will offer BMW’s latest infotainment systems with either a 6.5-inch or 8.8-inch Touch Control Display if a navigation system is selected. A full-color Head-Up Display is also optional.
BMW has not announced the pricing for the 2018 BMW X2, but it will arrive in the spring.
