2008 Ford Focus Spy Shots…Why Doesn't the U.S. Get the Better Euro Version?

The new 2008 Ford Focus has been spotted and as you can tell from the pics, it doesn’t look much better than the current version. Ford unveiled the new 2008 Focus sedan and coupe at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year. It is nice that they finally decided to freshen their aging U.S. Focus, but why won’t Ford bring over the Focus that is sold in Europe?

The Focus in Europe is built on the same platform as the Mazda 3 and Volvo S40, which is a lot more up to date than the version we have here. How does the automaker expect to remain competitive if they just keep freshening the same first generation Focus? Cost is obviously a big issue, since apparently the new platform is more costly than the first gen., but can’t Ford figure out a way to do it? It just seems that until the automaker gets serious about their small cars in the U.S. they are not going to pull themselves out of the red. Would someone actually buy this car over a Civic, Corolla or even the new Saturn Astra?
