We’re still eagerly awaiting the arrival of the production version of the I.D. Buzz concept, but in the meantime VW is going to show off a commercial version this week at the LA Auto Show. VW has announced that the I.D. Buzz Cargo concept will be shown off at the show as a preview for a production version that could go on sale in 2022.

VW I.D. Buzz Cargo Concept

The I.D. Buzz Cargo concept is based on the original concept, but its rear seats and windows have been removed to turn it into an autonomous delivery van. To make room for the extra cargo, the I.D. Buzz Cargo concept has been stretched by four inches. It also features a solar roof, wider rear doors and a new rear bumper. The solar roof features a photovoltaic system that generates enough energy to extend the range of the driving range of the concept by up to 9.3 miles a day.

Depending on which battery option you choose the electric I.D. Buzz Cargo concept can travel between 200 and 340 miles on the WLTP cycle. The 111 kWh battery can be charged to 80 percent capacity in 30 minutes with a 150 kW DC fast charger. The concept is powered by a 201-horsepower electric motor, a single-speed transmission, and rear-wheel drive. All-wheel drive could be added to the production version simply by adding a second electric motor that would drive the front wheels.

Right now VW says that the I.D. Buzz Cargo concept could go on sale in Europe, but it hasn’t announced any future plans to offer it in the US.
