Volkswagen continues to expand its future electric car plans under its “Roadmap E” plan and today it’s announced that by the end of 2022, VW will build electric vehicles in 16 locations around the world. VW Group currently produces electric vehicles at three locations, and within the next two years an additional nine plants will be start producing them as well.
VW has also confirmed that it will add more electrified vehicles to its portfolio this year. Another nine new vehicles, three of which will be purely electric vehicles, will be added to the Group’s electric portfolio of eight e-cars and plug-in hybrids. We already know that one of the new EVs will be the Audi e-tron SUV.
Starting in 2019, the VW Group will introduce a new electric vehicle “virtually every month.” “This is how we intend to offer the largest fleet of electric vehicles in the world, across all brands and regions, in just a few years,” stated Matthias Müller, CEO of Volkswagen AG.
Even with all the focus on electric vehicles, Volkswagen is quick to point out that it is not abandoning its conventional powertrains. “We are making massive investments in the mobility of tomorrow, but without neglecting current technologies and vehicles that will continue to play an important role for decades to come,” said Müller. “We are putting almost EUR 20 billion into our conventional vehicle and drive portfolio in 2018, with a total of more than EUR 90 billion scheduled over the next five years.”
